Founder of TOMS Shoes to Speak at University of Hartford
April 6th, 2010
Blake Mycoskie, founder of TOMS Shoes, will speak at the University of Hartford about new social entrepreneurism on Tuesday, April 6th at 7:30 p.m. in the Lincoln Theater.
While traveling in Argentina, Mycoskie noticed how the poor conditions were affecting children's feet. The lack of shoes in small villages leads to painful injuries, infections, and in some cases the need for amputation. What many people in America consider a fashion accessory is really a vital need, and Mycoskie sought to address that need.
The foundation of TOMS Shoes is based on the theory of One for One: with every pair of shoes they sell, TOMS will give a pair of new shoes to a child in need. They consider it "using the purchasing power of individuals to benefit the greater good." TOMS Shoes has given away over 400,000 shoes to children across the world since the company was started in 2006.
Friends of TOMS, the partner non-profit organization of TOMS Shoes, is "dedicated to mobilizing, connecting and empowering individuals who want to give further aid to communities served by the TOMS One for One movement."
The lecture is part of the Ellsworth Lecture program, which was created by Ensign-Bickford Industries, Inc. based in Simsbury, in honor of John E. Ellsworth.
This event is free and open to the public. Tickets are available by calling 860-768-4228 or 800-274-8587.
